What are Sisterlocks™?
Sisterlocks™ were created and trademarked by Dr. JoAnne Cornwell. The highly desired twist on traditional dreadlocks are smaller, very intricate and highly versatile. The natural hairstyle is installed by using a special tool and interlocking method that builds the locks from the ends of the hair to the root.

How are sisterlocks™ different from traditional locks?
For starters, Sisterlocks™ are much thinner than traditional dreadlocks. Traditional locs typically require hair products (wax or balm) to lock in twists, but Sisterlocks™ are established by a unique weaving technique using a latch hook tool. Sisterlocks™ require no hair product and are installed in very small sections.
Are you certified?
Yes, I am! Due to its intricate nature, Sisterlocks™ should only be installed by professionals that have received the proper hands-on training required to ensure the trademarked technique is performed correctly. I have completed extensive hours of Sisterlock™ training and am listed as a Certified Consultant on the Sisterlocks™ official website.
How long do I wear this hairstyle?
Sisterlocks™ is a lifestyle! It can be a lifetime commitment. It can be styled many ways, but is not easy to remove. When you make the decision to start your Sisterlock™ journey, you should be certain and enthusiastic! If you’re still on the fence, schedule a consultation with me and let’s talk through it. Together, we can determine if this lifestyle is for you!
How much does it cost?
I will tell you like a wise woman once told me, “it is an investment in yourself.” Sisterlocks™ start around $500. Schedule a consultation so that we can go into detail about all the costs involved as many factors, such as length and thickness, can determine the cost of your locs.
How long does it take for an establishment?
It varies, sis! Because of the intricate weaving technique, various hair textures and lengths, installs can take anywhere from 30 hours or more. We will discuss a more approximate timeframe for your process during your consultation and after I am able to properly assess your natural hair.
Will I love my sisterlocks™?
This is your unique journey, sis! It will look and grow to your natural self during your journey. Dr. JoAnne Cornwell, Sisterlock™ founder, says “Sisterlocks™ is not about a hairstyle. It’s about a lifestyle. Sisterlocks™ invites women who are interested in self-empowerment and cultural self-expression to embrace a natural hair care system that is self-affirming and truly gorgeous.”
How long does my hair need to be to start the process?
The recommendation is 4 inches to begin your loc journey.
Do I have to wait to color my hair?
Yes, typically color can be added after your locs have “matured”. It is recommended to color your hair a few weeks prior to your establishment.
Can any hair texture work with Sisterlocks™?
Coarser, thick hair are best for locs. However most natural textures will adapt to the natural locking process.
Why do some women have curly ends with their Sisterlocks™ and others have straight ends?
Everyone’s journey is unique! Depending on your curl pattern of your natural hair will determine the end result of your “look”.
How versatile are Sisterlocks™?
Being that you can style, color, braid, roller set or just let them hang, Sisterlocks™ are impressively versatile. They are a lot easier to style than traditional locks because they are lighter in weight, thinner in size, and flatter at the root texture.
